Richie Hawtin @ Axis
Last night, Chris and I trekked over to Axis to catch Richie Hawtin in a weirdly surprising appearance in Boston...and I just have to say that it was one of the single best Dj performances I have ever seen. His squelching, driving, set ranks up there with Vapourspace and Prototype 909 in Syracuse in 1996 (I think?), Ed Rush & Doc Scott in 1997...all the great shows. It was that good...a non-stop rush of tweaked-out bleak beats for over two hours.
It was like I was back in a sweat-dripping-off-the-ceilings warehouse with poor acoustics (not that it ever mattered) listening to four-to-the-floor biznezz...but then you walk out of the place and you slip in some ketsup, peppers, and onions, and you realize you're on Landsdowne Street.
Oh, and on the way home, in Harvard Square, Chris and I passed two (2!) Lamborghini Gallardos stopped at a red light...I think they were drop-top/t-tops? Very bizarre, but very cool.
Here are three sets from Mr. Hawtin from the good souls at Paxahau (Detroit, where, according to some Axis-goers, he plays packed clubs for 10 hours at a time):
- Richie Hawtin live, 09/04/05
- Richie Hawtin, Luciano, & Rich Korach tagteam, 09/05/05, part 1
- Richie Hawtin, Luciano, & Rich Korach tagteam, 09/05/05, part 2

That photo is laughably bad on a real screen. Which I'm allowed to say, since I thought it would be a good idea to take it in the first place. When I took it, you could actually see his face.
The Gallardos were really a treat. As I walked through the park to my apartment, I could hear them off in the distance, 20 sonorous cylinders of rolling thunder.
